The Benesse Art Site, on the island of Naohsima in Japan’s enchanting coastal region of Setouchi, tops Departures' list of eight ultimate travel destination for art lovers.

Designed by Pritzker-Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, this remarkable island of contemporary art and architecture includes 5 Monet water lily paintings hung in an underground room of natural light, as well as works by James Turrell, Bruce Nauman  and the famous Kusama pumpkins. The Benesse House Museum is part museum and part hotel.
