After losing 13 employees to addiction at various restaurants, Lexington, KY restauranteurs Rob and Diane Perez decided to give recovering substance abuse addicts a second chance through employment at DV8 Kitchen.

“Cooking is 100 percent therapy,” Rob tells the NYT. “There is something magic about kneading the dough side by side with someone else, not making eye contact. It is very tactile and freeing.” Diane adds, “We are not certified experts in [recovery], nor do we claim to be. We are just providing the piece of the puzzle that is giving people a job right away when they are getting clean.”
